Negatives on your credit report can stay up to 7 years. These unpaid judgments can stay up to 7 years or until the statue of limitations runs out, which ever is the longer one. So if you had a negative item on your credit report 3 years ago, it will stay for another 4 years. If you have bankruptcy on your credit report, that can stay for 10 years. There are two kinds of negatives on your credit report. Those negatives that are accurate and those that are inaccurate.

If you have inaccurate negatives on your credit report, you will need to remove negative credit report right away. These can be disputed and have to be done in writing. You need to tell the consumer reporting company what is inaccurate in a letter and have it mailed certified mail with receipt so you know that they received it. Make sure to include copies of the letter and include copies of documentation that prove that it’s in accurate.

• Identify each line item in your credit report that is inaccurate

• Enclose a copy of your credit report and highlight or circle the area in question that you feel is inaccurate
• Keep copies of your letter
• Send it via Certified Mail with Return Receipt
